Time for a Healthier Life

Childhood obesity is a critical issue in our society. Rates of childhood obesity in Canada have almost tripled in the past 20 years. Learn more about this topic at http://www.childhoodobesityfoundation.ca/.  The current generation has become accustomed to an unhealthy sedentary lifestyle.  Unless we take necessary precautions here and now we may find ourselves outliving our children.

A healthier life for your children starts with a healthier life for you.  Although our government is now offering us a tax credit for sports participation http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/fitness/, we as individuals also need to take action to ensure that our children live a long and healthy life. Give your children a head start with a healthy diet along with plenty of exercise. Allow your children to take a role in cooking their own meals.  By doing this you will be teaching them about healthy chooses.  Do a little ‘googling’ google.ca and find tips on cooking with kids, here is one I found, http://www.straight.com/article-265268/making-healthy-eating-fun.  Choose a healthier lifestyle for your family by adding one new healthy habit each month, mark it on your calendar!

As for exercise the best form of exercise for children is playing outside. Taking part in sports is a great way for children to stay fit and strong. Parents can take on a more proactive role in their children’s sports activities by being actively involved. All children look for approval from their parents; by showing an interest in their sports activities they will enjoy participating.

Taking the kids to regular practices and attending games is can be a challenge, however, with good communication with the children’s team, time management and being organized in advance will create some of your fondest memories of parenting.

Investing time, means spending time now to save time later. It is advantageous to know your child’s coach or sports management committee. This relationship will bring you closer to understanding the coaching methodology, the purpose of practices and your child’s level of sporting achievements.  If available find out in advance, when all the practices are scheduled.  Thus giving you plenty of time to co-ordinate your schedules. It is also a good plan to have a ‘buddy’ system with a few other families on the team.  When you have conflicts in your schedule, you can now call on someone you trust take your child to the event. Creating a healthy life for your entire family is a recipe for successful parenting.
