Ever seen a sport that tests an individual’s skill, determination and strength? People call the sport as Tennis. Founded in the 19th century, Tennis originated from the United Kingdom. This Olympic sport is played by people of all age groups. It is largely divided into two categories, the singles and the doubles. Men and women have their own singles matches while doubles has an opening where one couple with a man and a woman plays against another couple consisting of another man and a woman. This Olympic sport has four Grand Slam tournaments namely the Australian Open, the French Open, the Wimbledon and the US Open.
All these four grand slams are applicable for both men and women. The Tennis for women started a long time after the men’s tennis. Now the women’s tennis has a separate association named the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). This association ranks the players according to their match performances and their tournament performances. But there were always two players who never gave up their spot of being number one for a very long time. The William sisters who were former number one champions in the world have shown what playing tennis really means.
The elder sister Venus Williams was born in the year 1980 in America. She turned into a professional tennis player on October 31, 1994 at the age of 14. The former world number one, currently ranked as world number three has been a sensational player throughout her career. The champion player has created several mind boggling records. Stumped by injury she lost her rankings in the mid 2006 but recovered soon by winning the Wimbledon as the lowest seeded and ranked player in the history.
Coming to the younger sister named Serena Williams, she was born in 1981. She started playing professional tennis in September 1995. Serena has also enjoyed the status of being a world number one player. She is now placed one rank above her sister, at the second spot. The younger sister too created extraordinary records but followed the same suit as her elder sister and fell down because of injury. But injury didn’t stop her from making a comeback into the world tennis. She made it with a bang by winning the Australian Open. Slowly but steadily she made her way up and now stands at the top.
But during their delightful careers, both the sisters have clashed in several important matches and at several nail biting finals. The two sisters have clashed on 21 occasions and each of the matches has been epic battles between the sisters. The two are ruthless on the court but the most loving sisters off it. Out of the 21 clashes, their head to head record is 11 to 10 with Serena leading her sister by a close margin. Both the sisters are happy about each other’s performance and draw inspiration from one another.
Venus’s comments on her engaging rivalry with Serena by saying “I always like to win. But I’m the big sister. I want to make sure she has everything, even if I don’t have anything. It’s hard. I love her too much. That’s what counts.” While Serena explains by saying that “For the younger sisters, we always look up to the older sisters because they’re always ahead of us and they always win.” With the entire world wishing them all the luck , the two sisters continue to rampage the world tennis with their blistering strokes and their masterful plays.
